October to December 2006

Barry's News Page

Hello again,

Hello everyone. I am so sorry not to have updated the web diary for you over October and November. So much has happened: Staff holidays, work with the sad loss of soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, local funerals, the opening of the new shop in Sidcup. Well I could go on and on! So I am taking this opportunity to update the diary in one go for Christmas 2006.

As I write this today, we are only three days from our Christmas Memorial Service.  For those who are unable to attend, the programme for the service can be viewed by clicking here.

So much work goes into the preparation of the service, which believe it or not, began in January of this year. Today we are wiring up the sound system, testing, rehearsing etc. Well you can imagine, as I write this, 600 chairs have just arrived, toilets, lights, programmes (which have been printed by The Southwark News our local weekly newspaper – many thanks to Chris & Kevin for that). The catering; mulled wine, soup, mince pies and bread pudding are all under way. All of us enjoy working as ever as a team, for what has become a very special evening every year for thousands of people.

With Christmas approaching, I am again in awe of the wisdom, strength and sincerity of all of the families we serve. I will for a few hours, open as I do each year, the garden and chapels on Christmas morning. I will never forget how much it means to the bereaved to visit on such a family day. My thoughts and prayers are with the newly bereaved. Any loss is bad as we can imagine, but a loss at Christmas must be devastating to a family.

The doves have just landed and the largest is knocking on my window to be fed as he does each day.

We are as a staff and family of course, operating an emergency service over Christmas and the New Year and the Memorial Garden will open from 10am – 12pm each holiday day.

May I take this opportunity to wish all of those we have served, all of our many friends and colleagues, the warmest of Christmases?

Love and sincere best wishes. God bless.

Barry and family

p.s. Hello to Valerie in Liverpool – keep well!

That’s all for now.

Cheerio
