Barry's News Page
Hello again,
So February arrives and I am officially another year older, having
reached the mighty age of 56 on 2nd February.
We were all
witness to a day of phenomenal winds a week or two ago. Myself and
some of the staff heard firstly the creaking and breaking of a
beautiful old oak tree in the corner of Southwark Park. It fell to the
ground in front of my very eyes, inches away from the fence of the
Memorial Garden. The park was immediately sealed off and closed for
everybody’s safety.
A tree also fell
at the gate of the park, narrowly missing some school children thank
God, yet slightly injuring their teacher. It fell across the road and
we had huge difficulty getting funerals in and out due to the traffic
chaos, but as ever we managed.
My thoughts
drifted back about 47 years, when I was a boy cub at Scout House 6th
Bermondsey. A boy in my troop, was playing in the park on his way home
from school when his life was taken by a falling tree. I guess it must
have affected me the fact that this memory is still so readily with me
today. I can still see his face, his cap, scarf and woggle – a great
kid whose life was stolen from him so very young and I am reminded
steeply of how fragile this life is.
My son Jon,
recently experienced the road rage of a rogue bus driver in Eltham,
when for no reason at all, it pushed the horses across the road into
oncoming traffic, one horse losing a shoe. When Jon tried to stop the
bus, it continued to edge its way through pushing Jon along. The bus
driver was eventually dismissed from his position and the news article
went to local and national newspapers and television and radio news.
Our thoughts go out to the family concerned as this memory will be
foremost in their minds when they reflect on the funeral and that is
wrong.
Jon in my opinion conducted himself with decorum, respect and
strength. Well done Jon!
We will be
updating the web site shortly and doing profiles on the staff – so
look out for that!
Otherwise all is
well with us – I look forward to our web chat in March (albeit a bit
one sided!)
A quick hello to
Valerie and thank you for the birthday card!
Best wishes
